The Sawcliffe Hill Cemeteries

Sheffield's Hill is located between the Romano-British villa at Winterton and the Iron Age and Romano-British settlement at Dragonby. It is the site of 2 Anglo-Saxon cemeteries from the 6th and 7th centuries and has a fascinating story to tell. Dr. Kevin Leahy was part of the excavation team and will unfold the mysteries of the site.

In 2019 John Allen told us the amazing story of Jack Binns - a local boy who became a radio operator on the SS Republic in 1909 and saved over 1,500 lives (still the largest high sea rescue to date). He was later offered a position on the Titanic which, fortunately for him, he refused.
